PHOENIX is a TDM plug-in suite for Pro Tools HD that is designed to put analog color into the digital domain by increasing apparent loudness without increasing gain (e.g., by modeling analog tape compression).
The result is that added realism that is missing in many modeled synths, EQs and digital samplers. The five different "flavors" of PHOENIX can result in a much more musical and satisfying sound. Each one of the five different TDM plug-ins emulate different tape characteristics.
Each one also incorporates a color change button allowing three choices to modify the process per plug-in. The Gold button is the position where the color is approximately flat in frequency response, with Sapphire being a bit brighter and Opal having a warmer tonality. A level control determines the amount of the PHOENIX process integrated into the audio signal, and an input trim determines "how hard you hit the tape." Because the DSP process is level dependent, reducing the input level will also cause a change in sound. The input trim can also be used to prevent clipping in the rare cases where clipping may be a problem.
This can be useful on material that is hitting close to or at digital zero. When the input trim is at 0dB, (no change in gain) and no tape process is being added to the sound, the plug-in is bit accurate, meaning the output exactly matches the input. The PHOENIX suite contains five separate plug-ins:* Luminescent is the most neutral sounding process of the five.* Iridescent has a similar magnetic character, but with a fatter bottom and midrange.
Thisplug-in is the most similar to the tape knob on HEDD-192.* Radiant is characterized by a more aggressive compression curve* Dark Essence is even more aggressive.
(The effect is a color with a wider frequencyrange-when used on a vocal Dark Essence can reduce sibilance problems byincreasing the apparent loudness of the rest of thesignal.)* Cranesong phoenix vst starts more gently than the other four processes, but becomes as aggressiveas Dark Essence when the process is at full scale.Running within Avid's multi-shell architecture, PHOENIX is very DSP efficient. It will run approximately twenty instances of a plug-in on a single DSP chip (an HD system running at a 44.1 kHz sample rate).PHOENIX's color is dependent on signal level, program material and sample rate.
A higher sample rate results in smother sounds. The PHOENIX plug-in suite provides a wide range of choices to make your digital world sound warmer, fatter, and more alive.
The plug-ins can be somewhat subtle, but the cumulative affect when used on a number of tracks can bring back the warmth and richness which only analog recording has been able to provide.Phoenix runs on all TDM Hardware: MIX, HD, Venue.

If it is not the original owner one must buy a full license.Send us an email for doing an upgrade, we need your ilok idPhoenix II is an update of Crane Song's suite of TDM plug-ins designed to emulate the unique properties of a magnetic tape machine.Phoenix II runs both NATIVE and DSP on Avid's PT 10 AAX format.
Phoenix II uses 32 bit floating point math and has a lower noise floor than the original release.Designer Dave Hill has crafted this software with the same attention to detail he used to create the electronics for ATR Service's much heralded "Aria" discrete tape recorders.
His intimate knowledge of analog electronics, as well as decades of experience as a recording engineer has spawned a very useful, musical suite of plug-ins. The Phoenix II process not only incorporates the nonlinear saturation characteristics created by magnetic tape itself, but also includes the interrelation of an analog tape recorder's record/reproduce electronics and equalization curves.
Phoenix II is a ground-up application derived from HEDD technology, and specifically engineered and optimized for Avid's PT 10 architecture.Phoenix II has five different tape-analog characteristics, The type is selected with a switch for easy comparison between the types, and the brightness is also selected with a switch. Gold is the position where the color is approximately flat in frequency response, with Sapphire being a brighter, and Opal being a warmer tonality.
A level control determines the amount of the Phoenix II process integrated into the audio signal, and an input trim determines "how hard you hit the tape." Because the DSP process is level dependent, the input level trim control has been improved and an output trim control has been added. The input trim can also be used to prevent clipping in the rare cases where clipping may be a problem and bringing up the level of a track for an increased amount of color.
This can be useful on material that is hitting close to or at digital zero and on material that has a low recorded level. When the input trim and output trim controls are at 0dB, (no change in gain) and no tape process is being added to the sound, the plug-in is bit accurate, meaning the output exactly matches the input. The Phoenix II contains five separate flavors:Luminescent is the most neutral sounding process of the five.Iridescent has a similar magnetic character, but with a fatter bottom and midrange.(This plug-in is the most similar to the tape knob on HEDD-192.)Radiant is characterized by a more aggressive compression curveDark Essence is even more aggressive.

Analog tape saturation processing analysis using the Phoenix II Pro Tools AAX plugin.
Phoenix II is developed by Dave Hill of Crane Song Ltd.Make sure to use a good pair of speakers or headphones to hear the subtlety of the analysis. Home About Advertise Contact Information Readers' Ads Videos Search News Latest Search Forum Latest posts FAQ Members Rules Search Magazine Latest issue Previous Issues Cranesong phoenix vst Advertise Search Reviews Articles Search Search Techniques Articles Search People Articles Search Sound Advice Articles Search Music Business Articles Search When a top hardware expert turns his attention to plug-in design, the results are a bit special.Dave Hill is one of the most highly respected designers of professional audio recording equipment.
His units sit comfortably in the worlds top studios, alongside the most revered outboard processors available (or not so available). Whether they are marketed under the long-standing Crane Song name or the more recent Dave Hill Designs brand, the highest possible sonic standards are assured. Furthermore, these designs are not simply beautifully made clones, as much high-end outboard can tend to be, but genuinely innovative pieces that often combine the best of analogue and digital technology.
The HEDD two-channel converter, introduced in 1997, and the Spider eight-channel mixer and A-D converter feature digital colour circuits, providing a form of tape emulation. In combination with superb conversion, this ability to add harmonic colour has made the units indispensable to those who have access to them.In 2001 Dave released Phoenix, a tape emulation plug-in for the Pro Tools TDM platform, derived from the code in the HEDD.
With Dave having designed the revered Aria electronics for ATRs tape machines, and with the HEDD algorithm sounding so good, a lot was expected of Phoenix, and it did not disappoint. The plug-in has been heard on countless hit records since, and a search through the archives of SOSs Inside Track articles reveals a long and distinguished list of advocates.
One might be forgiven for asking Well, back then there wasnt much choice for getting analogue-style colour in the box, and while it might have been great at the time, is it really still relevant 13 years on? When you have mixers with effectively limitless budgets using it on current projects, the answer is an emphatic yes. While those original designs have maintained their reputation for sublime sonics, Dave has delivered new analogue designs, and has also ventured even further into the digital world.
Phoenix has seen an update, becoming Phoenix II, the Dave Hill Designs RA plug-in offers a unique approach to second- and third-harmonic distortion, and the Crane Song Peacock plug-in represents Daves take on the characteristics of vinyl. All three involve digital implementation of harmonic distortion, and its worth mentioning that some of Daves current analogue designs, for example the Europa mic preamp, feature related (but not identical) processes operating purely in the analogue domain.
Why is this important? Well, a common weakness in plug-ins that seek to create these sorts of distortions occurs when manufacturers are brilliant with code, but dont fully understand the analogue circuits theyre trying to emulate. What we tend to see is that those who have the deepest understanding of analogue, and who have spent decades measuring analogue circuits on an oscilloscope, provide us with more analogue-like digital emulations an obvious example being Universal Audio.
There are few designers able to move as freely between these two worlds as Dave Hill, and its clear when we start to examine these plug-ins that they are the products of not only a brilliant mind, but a great deal of experience. Phoenix Rises AgainAs the name suggests, Phoenix II is an updated version of the original Phoenix plug-in. It now uses 32-bit floating-point maths rather than the 48-bit fixed-point of the older Pro Tools TDM system.
It has a lower noise floor, an updated GUI, and some functional enhancements in the form of an output trim and the collation of the five different process types into a single plug-in the original Phoenix was actually a suite of five plug-ins.So what exactly is Phoenix? Well, lets start with what it isnt. It isnt one of those recreations of a specific tape machine or tape formula. There are no perfectly modelled dancing VU meters, no comfortingly worn-looking Bakelite knobs, and no gently spinning reels of tape to remind us what to hear.
It was designed to give us the character of magnetic tape, to give us access to the colour, but not the noise or generally unwanted side-effects. It provides the sort of saturation, frequency response and compression that we normally associate with magnetic tape recording. So if we dont get variable wow, flutter and hiss, what do we get? Running from left to right there are knobs for Input Trim, Process, Output Trim, Brightness and Type.
Input Trim is fairly self-explanatory, allowing the user to boost or attenuate the input signal by 10dB. The Phoenix process is heavily dependent on the nature and level of the source, and this Join Forum Home Today's Posts Mark Forums Read Events Competitions Reviews Deal Zone Classifieds Gear Database Merchandise Music Biz Articles Tips & Techniques Video Vault Directory / Jobs Posting Guidelines Support Us Quick Links Today's Posts Mark Forums Read Open Contacts Popup Networking Contacts Social Groups User Control Panel Edit Avatar Edit Your Details Edit Options Miscellaneous Subscribed Threads Your ProfileUser Tagging Statistics I was waiting for RTAS cause I don't really want to upgrade to Pro-Tools 10.and we don't know yet how the AAX format works with RTAS together?
We don't know of the limitations yet.so I was hoping for RTAS.Also do we know if there is an upgrade fee? NO TDM and NO RTAS!!! sorry, but for those who have owned the plug for years and are not looking to jump in to PT10HD blindly, this is a serious oversight on Cranesong's part.
I would be happy to pay for an upgrade and then change to AAX when I'm ready.Lame! That's the neat thing about AAX (theoretically) you can open a native session with them using your HDX system and they will accelerate so the sessions are compatible.now if AVID would just lower the upgrade price a teensy bit. Aaah thanks! Didn't realize we could use AAX plugins without the HDX card.I would actually want some proper clarification on this as well.
And not just based on speculation and assumptions.I got the impression that aax is a format for hdx which will use both the dsp and native power. I am also under the impression that aax will not work in a hd native system or PT 9 or PT 10 setup.I really hope that I'm wrong tho. I would actually want some proper clarification on this as well. I am also under the impression that aax will not work in a hd native system or PT 9 or PT 10 setup.I really hope that I'm wrong tho.I just updated. There are AAX plug-ins already in PT 10 (HD native) and regular PT 10 (ran it on my macbook pro). AAX DSP requires a Pro Tools|HDX card for processing. Or you want to take your analogue experiments up a notch while still keeping everything In The Box?In either case, and whether your budget is $0.00 or $200, theres something for everyone here. Take a look at this selection of the best saturation plugins around:1. FabFilter SaturnSaturn is a distortion and saturation plugin (with multiband capabilities if required) that can produce effects ranging from warm and subtle analogue saturation to full-on crunchy bit-crushed digital distortion.
Really, this plugin is a potential one-stop shop for saturation as its so flexible themodulation, panning and even compression options are excellent (as always), and the clickable spectrum analyzer field at the back is where you can visually set up the crossover points for your different frequency bands, that can then all be treated independently.
Between this feature and the simple mix knob, you have so many options for how, and to what degree, you process your sounds.Available for: Mac all formats; Windows VST, VST3 and RTAS. BUY NOWvia PluginBoutique.2. Sound Toys DecapitatorExcellent sound, great interface and simple controls.
As with other Sound Toys plugins, its easy to set up several settings and demo them against each other with the compare knob. But beyond this, Decapitator also has a really cool Style feature: select one of the five lettered buttons (standing for the classic gear they model: Ampex analog tape machine, EMI channel, Neve channel, and the Triode and Pentode settings on the Thermionic Culture Vulture valve enhancer) and you have just enough options to quickly find the vibe youre after.
By the way, from the name you might suspect Decapitator to want to tear your head off with distortion the whole time: but fear not, its amazingly good at just sitting quietly too and adding that warm analogue vibe to any part or track.Available for: Mac and Windows all formats; Pro Tools TDM.More info here.3.
PSP Vintage Warmer2Ive already talked about how the Vintage Warmer is a true modern classic, in my list of The Best 10 Compressors. With its large drive knob its simple to set up and just adds real sonic character to parts.
When you buy VintageWarmer2, you actually get 3 versions: MicroWarmer, a single-band, streamlined version; for using on individual parts; Vintage Warmer (LE), based on the CPU-friendly original; and VintageWarmer2, which uses double sampling for extra analogue fatness.
